Stride Mentoring Assistant—ID# 27552
Pacific Basin Rehabilitation Research and Training Center. Regular, Part-Time (50% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Basin Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (PBRRTC), Successful Transaction in Diverse Environment (STRIDE) Mentoring Project, located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and availability of funds.
Minimum Monthly Salary: $1,012.00 (@ 50% FTE).
Duties
Work under the direct, joint supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) and Project Coordinator to assist in assuring persons who are particularly deaf or hard of hearing are effectively included in project activities, as well as carrying out a wide range of clerical and fiscal tasks that support the project’s activities. Assist in the provision of technical assistance to the STRIDE Hawaii Mentoring Project, particularly persons who are deaf or hard of hearing. Identify and draft training material related to a) best or better practices for mentor and mentee training and surveys that are disability and culturally, contextually appropriate and relevant, and b) provide or participate as a team member in reviews of literature, collaborative planning, data collection and analysis, draft and final report writing, and an active team member in project evaluation. Act as lead on regular development, production, and dissemination of quarterly STRIDE newsletters. Assist in the coordination of disseminating products through the development of a collaboratively developed dissemination plan and use of various electronic communication methods (e-mail, Internet, web pages, etc.) for information dissemination. Design and maintain the STRIDE Hawaii Web site. Efficiently transport self, others affiliated with the project, and materials to meetings, training sites, and collaborating agencies. Work with Principal Investigator and Project Coordinator to coordinate, facilitate, and communicate activities related to the quarterly Advisory Board Meetings and semi-annual Recognition Events.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college.
Experience
Two to four (2-4) years of involvement in providing ASL interpreting to diverse populations with disabilities aged sixteen to twenty-six (16-26) years of age and one to two (1-2) years of general work experience.
Abil/Know/Skills
- Knowledge of Hawaii’s minority community needs and needs of persons who are minorities with disabilities.
- General knowledge of community services for persons with disabilities.
- Knowledge of American Sign Language.
- Ability to interpret for persons who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Must hold formal certification of interpreting skills and produce current certification.
- Excellent skills in using personal computers including word processing software, spreadsheet, familiarity with Power Point and graphics, OCR software, and use of the Internet for research and communication; good writing skills.
- Must be able to produce products incorporating graphics for project newsletter.
- Must be able to assist with logistical planning, implementation, and coordination of any conferences, seminars, special events, and other technical assistance consistent with the goals of the project.
- Ability to interpret American Sign Language.
- Possession of valid driver’s license and access to personal, insured vehicle.
- Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check.
Desirable Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Social Sciences.
- Completion of college-level courses related to serving persons who are deaf; training, classroom instruction, or workshop presentation in the areas such as: a) self-determination skills, b) consumer choice, c) school to work transition, d) mentoring, e) self-advocacy.
- Hands-on experience as a mentor to a person with a disability.
- Possess a degree from an Interpreter Education Program.
